Basel is a European cultural centre: More than 30 museums, some of world renown, such as the ‘Fondation Beyeler’ and the ‘Kunstmuseum’ and the Basel Theatre, which stages plays, operas and ballet, as well as 18 further small theatres, a musical stage, countless galleries, music stages of all sizes and over 40 cinema screens all contribute to a rich cultural life. The city ranks with the European elite in the fine arts, as is demonstrated by its hosting ‘Art Basel’, the world’s leading contemporary art fair.
Thriving business location – innovative research
Basel is the most dynamic economic area in Switzerland and one of the most productive and innovative worldwide. This success story has been built upon the global achievements of its pharmaceutical companies, which include two of the world’s top five. In their wake, a whole cluster of life sciences has developed from numerous large groups, start-ups and spin-offs.
On the one hand, the Basel economy is characterized by the life sciences industries - including cutting-edge medicine - the chemical industry, financial services, logistics and the creative industries (design and architecture). On the other hand, however, nano-technology and energy also play a prominent role. Research and education has therefore enjoyed a high priority: excellent schools, a traditional university and an innovative college ensure the training of the next generation

Here’s to Basel: a beautiful historic Old Town, the river Rhine flowing right through the city, many parks and playgrounds, all clean and safe. There is also a wide range of restaurants and bars, excellent shopping and nearly unlimited leisure opportunities and recreational facilities.
