Breisach

Breisach is a town with approximately 16,500 inhabitants, situated along the Rhine in the Rhine Valley, in the district Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, about halfway between Freiburg and Colmar — 20 kilometres away from each — and about 60 kilometres north of Basel near the Kaiserstuhl. A bridge leads over the Rhine to Neuf-Brisach, Alsace.

St. Stephan's Cathedral of Breisach

A very special treasure greets the visitor to Breisach from far South West - the St. Stephan's cathedral of Breisach. Situated on top of the cathedral hill the town's landmark overtops the houses of the old town and the Rhine lowlands. Its two towers guide the visitor the way to an interesting building, which recovers numerous treasures and to outstanding artworks whose enjoyment one should not miss out on. Roman and gothic elements can be found in the cathedral, which has presumably been build from the end of the 12th century on to the end of the 15th century.

The Architecture of St. Stephansmünster

The differing appearance of the two towers is the first thing that catches your eye. Clear separations between the floors of the north tower and the characteristic round arcade arches indicate that the north tower was completed first, while the south tower, with its tracery windows, shows its distinctly High Gothic stamp. The chancel is also a product of the High Gothic period. On its east side, it connects to a Romanesque main vessel with two aisles, while the west end displays Late Gothic elements.
